If you’re feeling anxious about school admissions, you’re not alone. Whether it’s Pre-K, middle school, high school, or college – public or private – the process in NYC can be intense. As a school admissions consultant and former DOE and independent school admissions officer, I’ve guided hundreds of families through this journey. But I’ve also been through it myself as a parent.

I know the pressure, the swirling deadlines, the urge to compare yourself to other families – and I also know how to help cut through the noise. Here are six strategies to help you stay calm, focused, and confident during admissions season:

  1. Get Organized Early

Put key dates and requirements into a shared calendar. Admissions timelines differ across grade levels and school types, so staying on top of deadlines can help prevent last-minute stress.

  1. Break the Process into Small, Manageable Steps

Don’t try to tackle everything at once. Choose a few tasks each week and be consistent – maybe it’s researching schools, attending a tour, or drafting one essay. Small steps add up and help the process feel more doable.

  1. Don’t Compare – Every Family’s Path Is Different

It’s easy to get caught up in what other families are doing. But every child – and every situation – is unique. What works for someone else might not be right for you. Stay focused on your values, priorities, and goals.

  1. Focus on True Fit, Not the “Name”

I made the mistake years ago of choosing a school based on prestige alone. It looked great on paper, but it wasn’t the right fit for me – and I paid the price. The right school is one where your child will feel supported, challenged, and happy.

  1. Don’t Go It Alone

This process can be confusing, time-consuming, and emotionally draining. Working with a counselor or admissions consultant – someone who takes the time to understand your child and family – can help you make more efficient, thoughtful decisions while minimizing stress. You don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

  1. Communicate—and Take Breaks

Keep the lines of communication open with your child. Ask how they’re feeling and what’s on their mind. And be sure to give yourself breaks, too. A little distance often brings clarity and calm.
